OUR SPIRIT
Sapphonix strives to push boundaries in the classical music world to make it more accessible
Through our concerts, we promote women, non-binary, and queer artists and composers within the classical music world. Our events are multi-disciplinary, so you can listen to classical music while experiencing other art forms.
What is Sapphonix Collective
Sapphonix is a Montreal-based arts collective founded in 2022 by organists Maria Gajraj and Esther-Ruth Teel, out of a need for a safe space where queer, BIPOC, female and non-binary classical musicians can share ideas and connect through multidisciplinary art experiences. Sapphonix hosts regular events, with the mission of making classical music more accessible, creating resilient creative communities, and providing local artists with a platform to share their art. Recent Sapphonix events have focussed on climate justice, with an emphasis on social justice and community-based art as resistance.
Sapphonix has been featured on CBC Radio. and “The Organ Manual”, an international organ publication, and has collaborated extensively with local organizations including the Montreal LGBTQ Community Centre; One Equall Musick; Earth World Collaborative; and ElleLui.
In addition to regular events, Sapphonix received funding from the Canada Council for the Arts for the first “Sapphic Passion”, a reimagining of the passion oratorio using the fragmented poetry of Sappho.
